Refugees, Resistance, and Reconnection

Theme: Building bridges in polarized environments

While working for a refugee resettlement agency, I was supporting communities fleeing persecution, war, and political trauma. One particular group of families wanted to settle together in a small town that reminded them of home. But local residents weren’t prepared for their arrival. Tension rose.

I helped coordinate a series of dialogues between the newcomers and local leadership, including the mayor. We listened. We addressed fears. We named common values. Cultural exchange events were introduced. Slowly, trust formed. Today, that town is home to a thriving, integrated refugee community — one that contributes meaningfully to local life.

In what ways can listening across differences open unexpected paths toward collaboration and belonging?

WHY THIS MATTERS IN COACHING: Leaders are often asked to hold multiple, competing perspectives. I support them in becoming bridges — fostering connection even in discomfort — and guiding systems through difficult conversations that lead to healing, inclusion, and progress.
